Final Project Reflection☼

For my final project, I wanted to remake the Coca Cola website. I wanted to really understand WordPress, and test my abilities. To me, the original Coca Cola site was not as creative as it could have been. I wanted it to be more responsive and fun. I added a CSS animation to the photos, a scrolling header, new fonts, hover link colors, and gifs at the bottom of some pages.

Of course, with this being WordPress, I ran into some problems. At first, I had problems with the logo. When I put it at the top with a circle and adjusted the size, the menu was on top of the scroll. Then, when I tried to change the padding, it still did not work. I ended up putting the logo at the top in the middle, so that everything cam into position. I also had troubles with the CSS. When I wanted to change things, some of the classes were not working. For a lot of things, I had to to ‘Inspect’ on the specific text or picture, and get the exact class, which sometimes had more words than I thought. After I did that, then the CSS changes would work. I also tried to use reusable blocks, but did not know that those blocks would change across the rest of the pages. I was so confused as to why one page would look the exact same as another page, and then I realized it was the reusable blocks. I ended up not using them, and instead copying + pasting the blocks, and changing them depending on which page on. Another challenge I ran into was finding a way to get the words over the pictures. I finally found out about covers, and used that to my advantage. Each top page has a cover header picture, and a caption over it. At first, when I would put the words over the picture, it gave it this weird filter/hue. I finally figured out how to get rid of the hue by getting rid of the overlay. One thing that has challenged me has been removing the titles from the pages. I have tried many different CSS codes, and even added !important, but for some reason, none of them have worked. I found a plugin but it had not been updated for two years, and I was not comfortable downloading it. I have not figured out how to get rid of them, so sadly, they will stay.

As for things I am proud of: I used CSS to make the images jump when you hover over them! I used a CSS code I found on w3schools, and changed the class so that it would add the effect to all of images. I was so excited when it started to work! I am also excited that I used another WordPress plugin. I used WP Forms to make forms and have it on a footer of the ‘Shop’ page. I wanted to work with more Plugins, and was excited to find this. It was very easy to use, and worked very well for me. I also used a plugin for the carousel, MetaSlider. This plugin made it really easy to make and insert the carousel. Furthermore, at the bottom of the pages, I put cute things like gifs, or another type of media to make it cute and fun. I also feel like I truly know WordPress. It was so much easier this time around, and I felt like I had a lot of ease creating pages and menus. I also finally understand pages and posts. I thought that I would need posts, but now I know that I mostly need to use pages and edit them. I also used WooCommerce for the products, so that when you click on the product, then it takes you to the actual page with the information! That was a bit tedious, but I loved how it turned out. I also used CSS to change the colors of the header background, and make links have a hover color.

Overall, I am happy about how this turned out. However, I still have a lot of work to do. There are things I know I can achieve, but I am so happy that I challenged myself with this website. I am so proud of how far I have come in just one semester. Looking back at how I first started, I am honestly so happy that I have this skill under my belt.

Lastly, thank you for being such a great teacher. You should be proud that you were able to teach so much in just 15 weeks. I am so happy that I am (slightly) apart of Grady!
